Sawbridgeworth

 
Al meer dan 30 jaar hebben we een uitwisseling met de Sawbridgeworth Tennis Club. Dit jaar was het onze beurt om de Noordzee over te steken, en op zaterdag 3 en zondag 4 september waren wij bij hen op bezoek.
 

Sunning and Clubbing

In most people's perception the summer of 2011 will be written down in chronicles as being wet and chilly, but for the Aeolus-Oledo members who went to Sawbridgeworth for the yearly exchange this one weekend made up for it. Despite a hefty Sunday shower the weather has been predominantly fine, and on Saturday (as well as the days before for those who had sailed or flown earlier) it was plain hot.

Throughout the years we've come to think fine weather is the standard for the Sawbo weekend. But most and for all it is the heartwarming reception and the special atmosphere which make this happening a huge success. The newcomers who have experienced these for the first time this year, will fully agree.

You’d better be prepared to give up some sleep, though. First of all it has become sort of a tradition to go clubbing on Saturday night. Besides, the ones who do the crossing from the Hook to Harwich are disembarked terribly early in the morning. And this year the party travelling through Calais-Dover had a particular spell of bad luck: due to the fog their ferry was heavily delayed and they reached their stop-over motel in the dead of Friday night. But these were all minor setbacks.

Armed with a specially made flag we came over in record numbers this year. It must have been a bit of a challenge for our English friends to get things organised. A certain Portuguese Mexican in the village knows a thing or two about that. Luckily some of the Dutch were quite willing to stay in the Railway Hotel overnight, so hopefully the number of beds to be hosted did not cause a really big problem.

We have enjoyed a lot of tennis, cricket, taco's, enchilada's, salsa, English breakfast, pickles, salads, cakes, beer, Pimm's (no. 1 of course!) and much more. All in all it has been a tremendous weekend, for which we say a big thank you to Simon, Frank, Janice, David, Charlotte and the hosts and all others who have run their legs off for us. Which creates expectations and obligations for next year.

In Dutch...

In de beleving van velen gaat de zomer van 2011 in de boeken als nat en kil, maar voor de Aeolianen die deelnamen aan de jaarlijkse uitwisseling met Sawbridgeworth TC heeft één weekend veel goed gemaakt. Ondanks een fikse bui op zondag hebben we toch voornamelijk goed weer gehad, en zaterdag (en voor degenen die een paar dagen eerder waren gegaan ook toen) was het zelfs ronduit warm.

In de loop der jaren zijn we het bijna normaal gaan vinden dat het mooi weer is in het Sawbo weekend. Maar het is vooral het hartverwarmende onthaal en de bijzondere sfeer die deze happening tot zo'n succes maken. De nieuwkomers die dat dit jaar voor 't eerst zelf hebben ondervonden, zullen dat beamen.

Je moet er wel wat slaap voor inleveren. Om te beginnen is het de laatste jaren gewoonte geworden om zaterdagnacht te gaan stappen (vandaar "clubbing"). Bovendien worden de Engelandvaarders tussen Hoek van Holland en Harwich 's ochtends ijselijk vroeg van boord gezet. De groep die dit jaar via Calais-Dover reisde had helemaal pech: vanwege de mist was hun overtocht zwaar vertraagd, waardoor zij pas in het holst van de vrijdagnacht bij hun motel aankwamen. Maar dat was allemaal klein bier.

Gewapend met een speciaal vervaardigd vaandel zijn we dit jaar met een record gezelschap overgestoken. Het moet dan ook een flinke uitdaging zijn geweest voor onze Engelse vrienden om de organisatie rond te krijgen. Een zekere Portugese Mexicaan in het dorp kan erover meepraten. Gelukkig was een aantal van ons bereid om in een hotel te overnachten in plaats van bij een gastheer en/of –vrouw, zodat het aantal benodigde slaapplaatsen hopelijk geen al te groot probleem meer was.

We hebben genoten van veel tennis, cricket, taco's, enchilada's, salsa, Engels ontbijt, pickles, salades, cakes, bier, Pimm's (no. 1 natuurlijk!) en nog veel meer. Al met al was het weer een geweldig weekend, waarvoor grote dank aan Simon, Frank, Janice, David, Charlotte en alle anderen die zich voor ons het vuur uit de tennisschoenen hebben gelopen. Dat schept verwachtingen en verplichtingen voor volgend jaar.

Jammer dat het zo snel voorbijging!
